Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is the best treatment for chronic back pain management

The most common kind of back pain is lower back pain, and acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine provides proven long-term relief of lower back pain.

What is Chronic Back Pain?

Acute lower back pain lasts less than 4 weeks and occurs due to inflammation. Those who suffer from lower back pain may experience restricted movement, tension, soreness or stiffness in the lower back area. The most common cause of back pain is usually disease or injury to the muscles, bone, and / or nerves of the spine.

Chronic back pain is pain that lasts more than 12 weeks; it can be a dull ache or even a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the legs or feet, and may include tingling, weakness or numbness. Common causes of chronic back pain involve abnormalities of organs within the abdomen, pelvis or chest. The most common is a lumbar disc herniation and generative disc disease. Other causes of back pain are cancer, kidney stones, bladder incontinence, osteoporosis, menstruation, fibroids, endometriosis and ovarian disorders. Normal pregnancies can also cause back pain in many ways, including stretching ligaments within the pelvis, irritating nerves, and straining in the lower back.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective of Chronic Back Pain

Acute lower back pain is caused by traumatic injury and low immunity which, from a Chinese perspective means that the body’s defensive energy is weak. External environmental factors invade the body, like Wind, Cold, Dampness and Heat. If acute lower back pain is not treated properly it can turn into chronic lower back pain. Chinese Medicine diagnoses this as “Bi syndrome” and includes disorders such as sciatica pain, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. When acute pain becomes chronic, the body is no longer able to heal itself, which affects the function of the kidney, liver and spleen.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine has been used for thousands of years to draw out excess fluid from tissues to aid in the reduction of swelling, inflammation and pain in the lower back. Acupuncture for back pain involves relaxing the torn or strained muscles, ligaments and tendons. When we reduce the fluid in these areas, often we find that the pain is also reduced, and healing can begin. Acupuncture can resolve tissue, joint or muscle imbalance and help increase circulation to an area thereby increasing fluid drainage away from the area which supports the removal of toxins from the damaged tissue.

What are the techniques we use for Chronic Back Pain?

  • Palpitation – Physically examining the body to find where the pain is located, it’s spread, the tightness there and severity of the pain.

  • Cupping – Suction designed to move Qi and blood, thereby promoting healing.

  • Biopuncture – A saline injection into the specific location under the skin or into the muscles.

  • Acupuncture – The insertion of fine needles to stimulate specific points of the body to release the blocked energy.

  • Electro-acupuncture – Acupuncture with electrical stimulation.

  • Auricular (ear) acupuncture — The insertion of fine needle on the ear point relive pain and stress.

  • Infrared lamp – Infrared Lamps emit infrared rays, which cause heat. This heat may assist in relieving pain, muscle spasm and stiffness.

  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – the use of electric current produced by a device used to treat pain.

  • Liniments and Oil –A liniment is an alcohol-based formula that herbs have been soaked in for a long while. To relieve pain and stiffness, such as from sore muscles or from arthritis. Oil is created in a similar manner, but no alcohol is used. Liniments absorb more quickly and generally have better penetration than oils.
